چکیده

By A. Rosix, M.D. F OLLOWING OBSERVATIONS of Haddow and Sext.o& on the ret.arding effect of urethane (ethyl carbamate) on animal tumors, attempts were made to influence the course of leukemia in both human 1)eings and animals vit1i the aid of this drug. Patterson, Haddow et al.2 succeeded in demonstrating a fall in the total w’hite cell count with a return towards a normal differential pattern in cases of myeloid and lymphoid leiikemias in man. Many other aut hors confirmed these results.3 ‘#{176} A similar effect of urethane was revealed in experiments done with the myeloid and lymphoid leukemias of mice.”’5 The mechanism 1)y which urethane leads to a reduction of the number of immature cells in the peripheral blood in leukemia is not. known. Observations on bone marrow of urethane treated! human beings and animals suggest the possiliility that urethane has no arresting effect on the mitotic activity of normal bone marrow3”’ 12 but selectively inhibits the multiplication of leukotic cells.3 ’ t2a, 15 In the present. study the effect of urethane on the mitotic activity of bone marrow cells of normal mice -as investigated.

Potency of some carbamates as multiple tissue sister chromatid exchange inducers and comparison with known carcinogenic activities.

The ethyl, ethyl N-hydroxy, isopropyl, and methyl esters of carbamic acid were examined for their abilities to induce sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in alveolar macrophages, bone marrow, and regenerating liver cells of C57BL/6J X DBA/2J F1 mice. The relative potencies in inducing SCE, ethyl greater than ethyl N-hydroxy- greater than isopropyl, paralleled previously described activities for i...

The Response of Normal and Malignant Lymphoid Tissue to Methyl- Bis-([3-Chloroethyl)amine and Ethyl Carbamate (Urethane)in Adrenalectomized and Non-Adrenalectomized Mice"

In a recent review Gilman and Philips (3) reported that nitrogen mustards in general have a depressant cellular effect which is most striking in tissues containing rapidly proliferating cells. Ethyl carbamate (urethane) is another drug that acts on dividing cells. Guyer and Claus (4) have shown that there is a marked reduction in the number of mitotic figures in the corneas of urethane-treated ...

The Use of Urethane (ethyl Carbamate) in the Treatment of Leukemia

H ADDOW and Sexton’ noted a coincidental depression of the leukocyte count during the course of observations on the effect of various forms of urethane On the growth of experimentally produced tumors in the rat. As a result, the various forms of urethane, principally ethyl carbamate, were subsequently utilized in the treatment of leukemias and other types of malignant disease by Paterson, Thoma...
